The picture above was taken on the day we finalized Andrew's adoption.  He was a little over two years old and came to live with us when he was six months old.  The letter below, was also written to him that day...I always thought he would grown up to read it.

Dear Andrew,

Today, your adoption was finalzied--exactly 20 months since you joined our family!  There is no way to put into words what a tremendous and wonderful impact you have made on everyone who knows you.  Even thought you are "busier" than the average kid, no one is happy you have left the room.  Every minute you are gone from me seems less 'bright'!

I am in awe of your character and abilities.  Your ability as a ball player, mostly basketball and soccer (you have shown an interest in baseball, too) is quite amazing even to your physical therapist.  Last night at a party, you were so upset that I removed you from tossing a football with a bunch of teenagers...you see no lack in your ability with a ball and neither does anyone else!

You are also, very observant--it amazes me what you learn that I don't even realize you are watching...like which key goes in what door and what a can-opener is for...looks like you are going to be mechanically enclined.  You and dad have so much to do together!

About your character...you are very concerned that everything is in order.  I see this as a godly as long as it is not put before God.  Our Lord is a God of order, not chaos.  I think the Lord is making you a shepherd.  You are very sensitive and desire to comfort those that are hurting.  I am praying that you will use this wisely and be discerning since you may be taken advantage of.  I see you shepherding other men, either leading your basketball team triumphantly into salvation and showing them the victory we have as heirs of the kingdom...what a team that would be!  You might only shepherd one hurting soul at a time as you walk out your life but I am praying you will not lose that sensitivity to him when  you are in the world.  Remember that God loves the tears of an honest heart.

Another quality is joy in dancing!  You can barely talk but how you praise the Lord in dance and in heart!  The Lord has taught me so much about worship lately, however, you have taught me too!  I hope to learn more from you.

While I love your sweet kisses and "Big Squeezes", I can't wait to see what God has for you!  I love you...you are a fine young man Andrew Pierce Wells!

Psalm 28:9  "Save your People and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever."

After court, we had a party to celebrate the adoption.  We had a great time and you did your 'trick' for them.  It was Daddy's birthday and you sang along while dancing on a chair during the Happy Birthday song to him!

Andrew, I can not tell you how much everyone enjoys being around you and how rare that is!  You are fine boy!

With more love than I can express

Mama
